So last week, we started discussing the next assignment and brainstorming some ideas down for what we were going to be doing.
The assignment this time is called “Welcome to Somewhereville”. Now the first question that comes to mind is, ‘where exactly is Somewhereville’ and ‘what are we going to be doing with it in terms of design?’ Well the task is to select one place that we are interested in and use it as a model for “Somewhereville” and it can be anywhere we want, even a world from a game or a book. However, when thinking of the target audience for this we need to think about the audience being the fans of the series or place that would like the location not the people that would actually exist there. For example, if I was doing Hogwarts, I wouldn’t be designing for Witches and Wizards, I’d be designing for fans of the Harry Potter series that would want to visit this location. At least that’s what I understand from the brief.
So before anything else, brainstorming on what to do for my Somewhereville was needed, and I managed to write down an incredibly long list of candidates for my Somewhereville:
At first I was going to do a real location, but then I started thinking of the possibilities of doing a fantasy or fictional world. After a lot of thought about it, I brought it down to my 3 favourite fictional locations:
- Elderscrolls’ Tamriel
- Once Upon a Time’s Storybrooke
- The Hobbit and LOTR’s Middle Earth
All very fantasy based, which is what I’m all about. I love fantasy and fairy tales so much and I already know quite a bit about them and I figured they were simple enough to do.
However, over the weekend I had some more thought that both Tamriel and Middle Earth are made up of lots of countries divided. So I’ve decided to go with doing ‘Storybrooke’ from ‘Once Upon a Time’.
Storybrooke is a small town in the middle of no where that shouldn’t actually exist in the real world, but due to a curse made by an evil queen, a large portion of fairy tale characters were whisked away along with a large portion of the fairy tale world “the enchanted forest”, and were brought to the real world, our world, and a world without magic, to create ‘Storybrooke’.
People who might be interested in Storybrooke??
- Fans of the show, Once Upon a Time
- Teenagers to Young adults, and some Adults
- Book lovers
- Fairy tale lovers
- Drama series lovers
Any way, I think that’s all I have for now to record from that week. I’ll see you in the next post, and remember…
